Phasmophobia: when should your team stop testing evidence?
Good investigations are not won by carrying every tool into the house. They are won by making the next test clear, cheap and safe enough that the whole team can learn from it.
Phasmophobia groups often get stuck in the same loop: one player suggests another device, someone remembers a clip, and everyone stays inside while the evidence board becomes less certain. The fix is to treat each test as a decision with a cost. Your team does not need perfect certainty before leaving. It needs enough information to make a defensible call.
The current official feed’s October 16 post is about the Ghost Hunts For Hearts charity event and Twitch Drop, not a gameplay patch. It should not be used as evidence that equipment, tiers or ghost rules changed. Always separate event news from patch notes when updating your investigation routine.

Give every test one question
Before someone picks up a tool, say what result would change the candidate list. A useful question sounds like “Can this test confirm a specific evidence type in the current room?” A weak question sounds like “What else should we bring?”
Write the question beside the evidence list. If the result cannot remove a candidate, it may still be useful for a secondary objective, but label it honestly. This stops the group from treating every observation as equally important.
Split information work from risk work
Assign two temporary roles:
- Evidence caller: keeps the candidate list visible, records what has been tested and names the next test.
- Risk caller: watches the team’s time, sanity or retreat condition and is allowed to end a test when its cost is no longer justified.
These roles should not belong to the same player during a tense investigation. The person focused on a device is often the least able to notice that the team has stayed too long. Giving someone explicit permission to call a retreat makes the decision part of the plan instead of a personal disagreement.
Use a three-state evidence board
Do not keep evidence in one undifferentiated list. Mark each item as:
- Observed: the team saw or recorded it in the current contract.
- Not observed: the team ran a reasonable test and did not see it.
- Untested: nobody has run a meaningful test yet.
“Not observed” is not the same as “impossible.” This distinction matters because a rushed team may mistake an untested tool for a negative result, then discard the wrong candidate.
Set a retreat rule before the next hunt
Choose one visible condition that ends the current investigation phase. Examples include a teammate reaching the group’s agreed risk limit, the team completing the current evidence test, or the group having enough information to select its best candidate. The rule should be specific enough that a new player can apply it.
After retreating, review only one uncertainty. Did the team lack a clue, misread a clue, or stay after the useful test was complete? Change one part of the next loadout or route. Changing everything hides the lesson.
Make the newest player the recorder
A new player does not need to know every ghost interaction to help. Give them ownership of the evidence board, the test question and the retreat timer. The experienced player can explain why a result matters, while the beginner practices the information loop that keeps the group coordinated.
This also prevents the common failure mode where one expert solves the contract silently and everyone else becomes a passenger. A shared record is more valuable than a perfect memory.
What the team should do when nothing is conclusive
If the evidence remains incomplete, choose the candidate that best fits the observed facts, finish any safe optional objective and leave. The purpose of an investigation is not to prove that the team can stay forever. It is to make the best supported decision while the group still has a way out.
