Before leaving port, agree what the crew values tonight: a quiet voyage, a risky fight, or a short objective with a clear end. Arguments often start because one player treats an encounter as optional and another sees it as the point.
Divide responsibilities plainly: who watches the route, handles sails, checks damage, and calls the next maneuver. Small crews can combine jobs, but someone must own each decision.
Keep voice calls actionable: direction, threat, requested action. “Ship left, closing; prepare to turn” helps more than a running description during a fight.
Gear and preparation: choose for the job
- Choose supplies for the planned voyage and crew confidence. A new crew benefits more from knowing where supplies are than from carrying an elaborate loadout.
- Cosmetics create identity but do not strengthen a ship. The outfit-saving announcement is useful to crews who like dressing as a team, not combat preparation.
- After a loss, review the decision point: route, awareness, repair timing, or communication. Blaming aim can hide a crew-level cause.
Our read: what this game asks of a group
The most valuable guide for a mixed-skill crew is a risk agreement. Decide whether you will fight, evade, or abandon loot before another ship appears. That prevents a tense encounter from becoming an argument about the intended session, and gives the newest player a useful job such as lookout or map reader.
Who this game fits
Choose it for players who enjoy shared navigation, improvisation, and stories created by other crews. It is not ideal for groups that need guaranteed progress or dislike losing time and cargo.
